Looking at the garden today (see photos below) it just seems impossible that in a few months it could look anything like this! Nothing is green today! |
Several weeks ago - early April - I went out and cut down all the dead growth that I'd left behind from fall. I wanted some winter interest in the garden but it was time to clean it up. What a pain.
Top bed, cleaned up from a long winter. |
Huge piles of dead foliage. Now what do I do with it? |
The garden beds after I gave them a good cleaning. |
Cleaning the bed from the fall leaves and winter. |
The garden after I cut out all the dead growth - brown and bleak at the end of April. |
And now, about three weeks after cleaning the dead growth out...
spring is beginning to feel like it's arrived.
Still so brown though -
Alium, tulips, delphinium and bleeding heart start to push through the cool spring ground. |
The lower bed begins to show a little life. What you see here is mostly delphiniums and penstemons. |
The Poppies spread a little more each year. They have been the very first show of green to the garden this year. What's not to love about Poppies? |

Extending the pathway...
So, while the garden slowly comes to life,
time for a different project.
If you head to the house from the garage, you have a nice winding flagstone pathway to lead the way.
However, if you arrive at our house and park in front, there is no obvious entry.
So....this weekend, we attempted to add on to the flagstone pathway.
Why does a little stretch of pathway mean so much work!
Still need to put down the 'breeze' between the flagstone pieces. |
It's suppose to snow tomorrow.
Spring is a long, unpredictable season.
